The International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) is a two-year, 120 ECTS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master coordinated by the University of Glasgow together with Dublin City University, Charles University in Prague, the University of Trento and the University of Belgrade. Students examine contemporary security challenges such as terrorism, cyber threats, conflict and transnational crime, combining academic coursework with practical training and work placements. Everyone spends semester one in Glasgow; semester two runs in Dublin or Trento depending on pathway, and semester three in Prague (with Belgrade available from the 2027–29 cohort). The final semester is dedicated to the dissertation, with an optional professional internship, at an approved location of the student’s choice. Graduates receive a joint international master’s degree awarded by the University of Glasgow.
Benefits & funding
- Erasmus Mundus scholarships: 50 regular awards plus up to 20 targeted awards for specific world regions, with at most 6 regular scholarships going to any one nationality.
- Each scholarship covers full tuition (including the deposit) and full insurance, plus a monthly living allowance — either €1,400 per month, or €1,275 per month with three €1,000 advance payments toward visa, travel and installation costs.
- Self-funded tuition for the 2026–28 cohort: £9,654 (≈€11,360) per year for Home/UK/EU students and £19,570 (≈€23,030) per year for international students.
- Self-funded offer holders pay a £2,000 deposit within four weeks of an offer; scholarship applicants owe no deposit until results are announced in April.
- Other routes include Erasmus+ Master Loans (Spain, Italy, Croatia, Romania, Turkey), UK government student loans, SAAS support for Scottish/EU students, and a Fulbright award for US students covering the first year.
Eligibility
- An upper-second-class (2:1) UK Honours degree or international equivalent in a humanities or social-science field such as politics, international relations, history, law, sociology or economics; relevant work experience can offset a lower grade in a qualifying field.
- English language proficiency evidence for applicants who are not from majority English-speaking countries.
- Pathway B (Trento) additionally requires a second language at CEFR B2 or above (other than English or Italian); applicants from computer science, engineering or philosophy backgrounds are not eligible for Pathway B.
- Open to applicants of all nationalities; previous Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship holders cannot receive the scholarship again.
