IMPRS UFAST is a structured doctoral program in ultrafast science, quantum materials, ultrafast imaging and structural dynamics. It is jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter, Universität Hamburg, DESY and European XFEL.
Students conduct an independent research project in Hamburg with supervision, scientific courses and transferable-skills training. The 2026/2027 call offers project-based positions, and applicants may select up to two projects.
Benefits & funding
- Every position is funded through an employment contract with a monthly salary intended to cover living costs, accommodation and insurance; the site does not publish a salary amount.
- Doctoral students pay no tuition, but Universität Hamburg charges a semester fee of about €310, including a local public-transport ticket.
- The normal program length is three years, with a possible extension.
- IMPRS covers travel and accommodation for shortlisted candidates invited to the Hamburg candidate workshop.
Eligibility
- Applications are welcomed from candidates worldwide; there is no stated nationality or residency restriction.
- Applicants must hold, or be about to receive, an M.Sc. in physics, chemistry or biochemistry and must have the degree by the time the PhD starts.
- Candidates should have a strong background in one of those disciplines and an interest in ultrafast imaging and structural dynamics.
- An English test is normally required, although the program may waive it when an applicant can demonstrate fluent written and spoken English after consulting the IMPRS office.
- No age, gender or work-experience requirement is stated.

Application process
- 1Review the advertised PhD projects and faculty research, then select up to two projects aligned with the applicant’s interests.
- 2From 15 September 2026, complete the online application form; email and postal applications are not accepted.
- 3Upload a CV, motivation and research-interests letter, English abstract of the Master’s thesis, Master’s and Bachelor’s certificates and transcripts, and an English-test certificate when required.
- 4Submit the application by 6 November 2026 and ensure recommendation letters arrive by 12 November 2026.
- 5Shortlisted applicants attend the Hamburg candidate workshop, give a short research presentation and interview with prospective supervisors. Final admission follows an offer of supervision and the Executive Board decision.
