The HKU Summer Research Programme is an intensive 10-week research training experience run by the Graduate School of The University of Hong Kong. It places high-achieving students from institutions around the world into research groups across HKU’s faculties (all disciplines except Law), pairing hands-on research with networking and extra-curricular activities.

It is aimed at students considering research postgraduate (MPhil/PhD) study and gives a first-hand taste of postgraduate research at HKU. Weeks 1–2 may be conducted online, with the remainder on campus in Hong Kong.

Benefits & funding

  • Completion scholarship of HK$10,000 awarded to each participant upon successful completion of the programme.
  • Airfare support up to HK$5,000 (reimbursement basis).
  • University accommodation support up to HK$5,000 (reimbursement basis).
  • Hong Kong residents receive accommodation support only.
  • Research training within an HKU faculty, plus networking and extra-curricular activities.
  • Note: the stated amounts may be adjusted pending approval of budget. A non-refundable HK$300 application fee applies.

Eligibility

  • Outstanding undergraduate students in Year 3 or Year 4 with a CGPA of 3.6 or above; or
  • Outstanding students in a Master’s degree programme who hold a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours.
  • Strong English proficiency; applicants from institutions outside Hong Kong must provide an English language test result.
  • Open to students worldwide — no nationality restriction stated (non-local participants are responsible for their own visa arrangements).
  • Selection prioritises research experience and academic performance.

Application process

    Prepare personal and academic information, a personal statement (300–500 words), a statement of research interest (100–200 words), a passport photo, CV, transcripts, and (for applicants outside Hong Kong) an English language proficiency test result.

    Submit the application through the online application system during the application window.

    Pay the non-refundable HK$300 application fee (Credit Card, WeChat Pay, Alipay, or Faster Payment System / FPS).

    Await results, announced by the end of March.
