The Global South Fellowship Scheme is run by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. It invites professoriate scholars from universities and comparable institutions across the Global South to spend one to three months in residence at HKU. Fellows work alongside a host faculty member on shared research, join departmental activities, and share their expertise with the HKU community. Up to ten fellows are selected each academic year. Visits fall within either the fall semester (September to January) or the spring semester (February to June).
Benefits & funding
- Economy-class return airfare reimbursed up to HK$10,000.
- A daily allowance of HK$1,500 for the full length of the stay, meant to cover accommodation and living costs.
- Access to HKU’s research environment, faculty, departments, centres, and strategic research themes.
Eligibility
- Open to professoriate staff (Assistant Professor rank or above, or equivalent) affiliated with a university or comparable institution located in a Global South country.
- The Faculty publishes a defined list of 138 eligible Global South countries and territories; applicants must be based at an institution in one of them.
- Each applicant must first secure a host at HKU: a Faculty member (Assistant Professor or above) with matching research interests, who agrees to act as Faculty Associate.
- Projects that align with the Faculty’s Strategic Research Themes are favoured.

- 1Identify and contact an HKU Faculty of Social Sciences member (Assistant Professor or above) whose research aligns with yours, and secure their written consent to serve as your Faculty Associate.
- 2Prepare a CV and an outline research proposal for the visit.
- 3Submit the online application form together with the required documents before the cycle deadline.
- 4Await the selection outcome, announced by the Faculty after the deadline.
