Official Page

The Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of Hong Kong runs this visiting fellowship to support research exchange with scholars from the Global South. Fellows work in Hong Kong with a Faculty Associate and other faculty members on collaborative research and academic exchange. Visits last one to three months in either the fall or spring semester.

Applications are sought twice each year. The page still lists May 31, 2026 as the latest deadline; it schedules the next spring call for September with a deadline in October, but gives no exact dates.

Benefits & funding

  • Economy-class return airfare is reimbursed up to HK$10,000.
  • Fellows receive HK$1,500 per day for the full visit, including accommodation costs; the allowance is typically paid monthly by bank transfer.
  • Fellows receive access to university IT services, libraries and computer labs, plus shared office space; the Faculty Office also provides visa guidance.
  • The package covers only the fellow, so any accompanying family costs are self-funded.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be professoriate staff affiliated with a university or comparable institution in one of the 138 locations on HKU’s published Global South list.
  • The published geographic gate concerns the applicant’s institutional affiliation, not nationality; no separate nationality condition is stated.
  • Junior scholars and researchers receive preference for their potential to sustain longer-term collaboration, but this is not a hard eligibility rule.
