HGHI-Salata Burke Climate and Health Fellowship — Fellowship

The HGHI-Salata Burke Climate and Health Fellowship supports early-career researchers studying the intersection of climate change and human health. It is offered jointly by the Harvard Global Health Institute and the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability.

Fellows work in person in the Boston area with a Harvard faculty mentor and devote at least 75% FTE to their proposed research. The current cycle is closed, and Harvard says information on future cycles will be posted when available.

Benefits & funding

Salary of $90,000 per year for two years, with the award applied to salary and related fringe benefits.
Harvard employee benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, paid sick and vacation time, and standard dependent benefits.
Professional-development support includes up to $3,000 for one open-access publication and up to $5,000 for a research conference or networking event.
Relocation costs are not funded.

Eligibility

Hold a doctorate or comparable terminal degree awarded between May 2022 and August 2026; applicants awaiting the diploma must have completed all degree requirements and provide institutional certification.
Propose research with a clear climate-change and human-health focus.
Secure a Harvard Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor as faculty mentor before applying; the host department must employ and administratively house the fellow.
Commit at least 75% FTE to the research and reside in the Boston area for the full two years.
Applicants of any nationality may apply; non-US citizens must be able to secure appropriate J-1 visa status for the in-person fellowship.

Application process

Identify a Harvard faculty mentor early and obtain the host department’s commitment to hire and house the fellowship appointment.

Prepare a CV, proposal title, a research proposal of no more than four pages excluding references, one publication or writing sample, a mentor support letter of no more than two pages, and an additional reference letter.

Submit the application through the official portal during an open cycle and ensure both required letters are uploaded by the deadline.

If selected as a finalist, expect HGHI to confirm the mentor’s endorsement and the department chair’s support before an award is made.
