G-RIPS Sendai is an eight-week international research internship jointly run by UCLA’s Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics and Tohoku University. Cross-cultural teams work in Sendai on mathematical and computational problems supplied by industrial partners, then present their results and prepare final reports.
The 2026 projects came from Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Daikin. Each four-person team combined two participants recruited in the United States with two recruited through the partner route in Japan.
Benefits & funding
- For U.S. participants recruited by IPAM, round-trip travel to Sendai, accommodation, a meal allowance, a stipend and conference support were provided.
- For participants recruited in Japan, participation was free, a per diem was paid under Tohoku University rules, and those coming from outside Sendai received round-trip travel and a private hotel room.
- Funding details varied by recruitment route and participant status; the official pages did not publish stipend or per-diem amounts.
Eligibility
- IPAM’s route accepted graduate students in mathematics or related disciplines who were U.S. citizens or permanent residents; second- or third-year PhD students were preferred.
- Tohoku’s route served students and young researchers studying at universities in Japan or living in Japan; master’s and doctoral students were the main audience, while undergraduates and people who had completed a doctorate could also apply.
- Applicants had to be available for the full eight-week program, work in English and meet the stated requirements of their chosen industrial project.
- Participants recruited in Japan had to obtain approval from their university supervisor or equivalent before participation was confirmed.
