GRIPS Berlin is an eight-week, in-person research program organized by IPAM with Research Campus MODAL in Berlin. Graduate students in mathematics and related disciplines work in cross-cultural teams on problems supplied by industrial sponsors.

The 2026 projects covered green-energy storage optimization, cryo-electron tomography foundation models, and geometric modeling for medical-image registration. Teams present their results and prepare a final report at the end of the program.

Benefits & funding

  • For participants recruited through IPAM, round-trip travel to Berlin and accommodation are included.
  • IPAM-recruited participants also receive a meal allowance and a stipend; no amount is published.
  • Funding terms for applicants recruited directly by international partners are not stated on the IPAM materials.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be graduate students in mathematics or a related discipline; second- or third-year PhD students receive preference.
  • IPAM accepts applications only from U.S. citizens and permanent residents, while other international applicants are directed to the relevant partner for separate application information.
  • English is the only language required for participation.
  • The official materials publish no age, gender, or work-experience requirement.
