The Faculty of Science (FNWI) at the University of Amsterdam runs this scheme under its Global South Plan. Researchers from developing countries spend at least two months in Amsterdam working with a faculty colleague who co-applies with them.
The pilot call (deadline November 2025) offered four places: one tied to DIEP’s research area on polarization, segregation and inequality, one to mathematics, and two open to any science topic. Five fellowships were awarded for 2026; no later call has been announced yet.
Benefits & funding
- A lump sum of EUR 10,000 for travel, visa costs and accommodation in Amsterdam.
- A working space in the host institute.
- At least two months; any extension and its funding are agreed with the co-applicant and host institute.
- Guest status: fellows are not UvA employees.
- Duties: on site at least three days a week, an opening presentation, and a closing report written with the co-applicant.
Eligibility
- Citizen of, and employed by an institution based in, a country on the UN DESA “developing” list linked from the call; also subject to visa availability.
- An employment contract or scholarship agreement with a university or research institute covering the whole fellowship.
- A committed co-applicant employed at FNWI as assistant, associate or full professor.
- Any career stage: PhD students, postdocs and staff.

Application process
- 1Agree a joint plan with an FNWI co-applicant.
- 2Obtain the host institute’s commitment letter (on the call’s template) and a support letter from your employer or supervisor confirming your availability.
- 3Submit the online application form with your CV and both letters by the deadline (midnight, 15 November 2025 in the pilot round).
