Official Page

The Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam runs this scheme under its Global South Plan, a faculty-wide effort to build lasting research partnerships with institutions in the Global South. Fellows spend at least two months in Amsterdam working alongside a colleague inside one of the faculty research institutes.

Funding is limited, so the pilot round advertised four fellowships and five were awarded for 2026. One place is tied to the research priorities of the Dutch Institute for Emergent Phenomena, one to mathematics through CIMPA, and two are open to any topic in the sciences.

A fellow stays employed at home and comes to Amsterdam as a guest of the faculty. Every application needs a professor at the faculty who signs on as co-applicant and intends to keep collaborating after the visit.

Benefits & funding

  • A lump sum of EUR 10,000 towards travel, visa costs and accommodation in Amsterdam.
  • A regular working space in the host research institute at the Faculty of Science.
  • Membership of the faculty research community and day-to-day collaboration with the co-applicant.
  • Guest status for the whole stay: fellows are not employed by the university and keep their home contract.
  • Four fellowships were advertised in the pilot round and five were awarded for 2026; one place is partly sponsored by DIEP and one by CIMPA.
  • A stay of at least two months, with the possibility of an extension.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be citizens of a country the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs classifies as developing, and be employed by an institution based in one of those countries.
  • An employment contract or a scholarship agreement at a university or research institute must cover the entire fellowship period.
  • Any career stage is welcome, from PhD candidates to postdocs and academic staff.
  • A co-applicant at the Faculty of Science, at assistant, associate or full professor level, must commit to the collaboration and host the visit.
  • Fellows are expected on site at the faculty at least three days a week.
