ETSU International Merit Scholarships support new international students admitted to degree programs at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. Admission applicants are considered automatically, so there is no separate scholarship application.

The scheme includes three undergraduate GPA tiers plus separate master’s and doctoral awards. Recipients must study full-time under a visa that permits full-time study and continue meeting the applicable academic conditions.

Benefits & funding

  • Undergraduate Blue Scholarship: $5,000 per year for an entering GPA above 3.0.
  • Undergraduate Gold Scholarship: $7,000 per year for an entering GPA above 3.5.
  • Undergraduate Elite Scholarship: $9,000 per year for an entering GPA above 3.75.
  • Master’s Merit Scholarship: $5,000 per year for an entering GPA above 3.0.
  • Doctoral Merit Scholarship: $9,000 per year for an entering GPA above 3.0.
  • Undergraduate awards are limited to eight semesters. Master’s awards are limited to five semesters, and doctoral awards to eight semesters, or to the program length where applicable.
  • The award helps cover out-of-state tuition and cannot be combined with another scholarship or program that covers or waives out-of-state or international tuition.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be new international students admitted to an ETSU degree program.
  • Applicants must have, or plan to obtain, a visa that permits full-time study.
  • Freshman applicants need at least a 3.0 high-school GPA; transfer applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA in prior university work; graduate applicants need at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA. Higher undergraduate award tiers require GPAs above 3.5 or 3.75.
  • Students seeking a second bachelor’s degree are ineligible if their first degree was awarded by ETSU. Students paying in-state or E-Rate tuition and applicants to M.D. or PharmD programs are also ineligible.
  • Recipients must enroll full-time. Undergraduates must maintain a 2.75 GPA, while graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA for continued eligibility.
