Benefits & funding

• €1,200 a month for accommodation and living costs, with taxes deducted from this amount.
• A round-trip economy flight from the capital of the fellow’s Latin American country of residence.
• Medical insurance that excludes pharmacy costs.
• The monthly amount is co-funded. At public partner universities the Foundation and the home institution each pay €600; at private ones the Foundation pays €480 and the institution €720.
• At some partner institutions in Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, the Foundation pays €900 a month and the institution €300.
• The Foundation pays the flight and insurance in every case.
• The stay lasts at least one month and at most three months (90 days), taken in one continuous block.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be citizens of a Latin American member country of the Ibero-American Community of Nations: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, or Venezuela.
• They must hold a doctorate.
• They must be career or permanent faculty, or administrative staff, at a Latin American university or institution that has a cooperation agreement with Fundación Carolina. That institution submits the nomination.
• The 2026 partner list covers institutions in 18 countries plus one regional body (FLACSO); no Panamanian institution is listed.
• They must already hold a written invitation from the Spanish university or research institution that will host the stay.
• They must not be resident in Spain.
• They must meet the program’s standard of academic excellence and professional experience; no minimum number of years is stated.
• No age or gender requirement is stated.

Application process

   Check that your university appears on Fundación Carolina’s list of partner institutions for doctoral and short postdoctoral awards.

   Secure a written invitation from a Spanish university that has signed the Foundation’s doctoral agreement, or from any Spanish research institute or centre.

   Ask your home institution to register your candidacy on the Foundation’s platform before the deadline (2026-04-09 for this cycle).

   Complete the online application using the instructions Fundación Carolina emails you once your institution has registered you.

   If selected, confirm acceptance and submit certified, legalised copies of your bachelor’s or engineering diploma and doctoral diploma, supporting CV documents, the host invitation, a passport copy, and a certificate of residence.
