The Royal Society runs Entrepreneur in Residence as part of its Science, Industry and Translation programme, with funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. It places experienced industrial scientists and entrepreneurs at UK universities for one day a week to develop a tailored project.
Projects help university staff and students understand industrial research, commercialisation and entrepreneurship while supporting research translation. The 2026 application round is closed.
Benefits & funding
- The award provides up to £25,000 per year for two years.
- It can contribute the equivalent of 0.2 FTE of the award holder’s basic salary for spending 20% of working time at the host.
- It can cover travel, necessary accommodation and project costs, including conferences, workshops and training.
Eligibility
- Applicants of any nationality may apply, but they must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom for the full award.
- Applicants need a science or engineering background and significant experience of science in an industrial research setting.
- They must also show at least one of the following: university-business collaboration and research commercialisation experience; entrepreneurship experience; or experience or interest in training, coaching or mentoring.
- Full-time employees, part-time employees and self-employed applicants are eligible; no academic degree, age or gender requirement is stated.
- The scheme covers life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excludes clinical medicine.
