The Emerging Voices in AI and Society Fellowship is run by the Center for Humane Technology (CHT), the non-profit known for scrutinising technology’s effect on people and society. It backs mid-career researchers, writers, journalists and practitioners to spend roughly six months producing a substantial piece of research or writing on how AI is reshaping human life. Work sits within five themes: AI and cognition, AI and relationships, AI and surveillance, AI and spirituality, and a technologist’s view from inside the machine. The programme is fully remote and, in its inaugural cycle, selected three fellows for a cohort running September 2026 to March 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • US$30,000 total, paid against three milestones: a finalised project proposal, a first draft, and the final delivered piece.
  • A part-time commitment of about 15 hours per week over roughly six months, with at least 10 of those hours overlapping US Eastern time.
  • Editorial input from CHT on the flagship deliverable, and association with a respected voice in the AI-and-society field.
  • A possible in-person gathering of the cohort at the close of the programme.

Eligibility

  • Open to mid-career researchers, writers, journalists, practitioners and thinkers with demonstrated expertise in AI and its societal implications.
  • Open to applicants based outside the United States; there is no nationality or residency bar.
  • No specific degree or age requirement is stated.
  • Applicants should be able to keep about 10 weekly working hours overlapping with US Eastern time.

Application process

    Choose one or two of the five themes to propose against.

    Prepare a 1–2 page research proposal for each chosen theme (up to two).

    Assemble a CV or résumé (2 pages maximum), a writing sample showing your research and analysis, and a two-minute video explaining why you are a good fit.
  4. 4
    Submit the application through the CHT fellowship page before the deadline; the CHT leadership team makes the final selection.
