EEML is a residential machine learning summer school held once a year in a different Central or Eastern European city; the 2026 edition runs 27 July to 1 August in Cetinje, Montenegro. It is organised by a committee of Google DeepMind researchers together with the Montenegrin AI Association (MAIA) and partner AI groups from Romania, Albania and the wider region. Days combine lectures by senior researchers with hands-on tutorial sessions, and the 2026 line-up includes speakers from Google DeepMind, MIT, New York University, EPFL, Oxford, IST Austria and Isomorphic Labs. Anyone aged 18 or over may apply from anywhere in the world, whether or not they are enrolled as a student. Places are competitive and decided on a written application; participants pay a registration fee unless they receive need-based support.

Benefits & funding

  • Six days of lectures and practical sessions with researchers from Google DeepMind, MIT, New York University, EPFL, Oxford and IST Austria.
  • Registration fee of EUR 100 for high-school, undergraduate, master’s and PhD students; EUR 150 for postdocs and faculty; EUR 400 for industry participants.
  • The fee covers lectures and lab sessions, breakfasts, coffee breaks, lunches, dinners (one evening excluded) and social events.
  • Accommodation is arranged separately at EUR 35 per person per night in a shared two-bed room, including breakfast, towels and linens; participants given free accommodation are placed in three-person rooms.
  • Need-based financial support is open to everyone, students or not, and can cover registration, accommodation and travel in full or in part; it is awarded on financial need rather than merit.
  • Shuttle transport is organised from Podgorica Airport for arrivals on 25 and 26 July and departures on 2 August.
  • Participants receive an electronic proof of attendance stating the hours completed.

Eligibility

  • Open to anyone aged 18 or over, from any country, student or not.
  • Programming experience (Python preferred) plus familiarity with linear algebra, probability theory and general machine learning is expected; highly motivated beginners may still apply.
  • No nationality, residency, degree or work-experience requirement.
  • Past participants may apply again, although the selection favours applicants who have not attended before.
  • Attendance is in person in Cetinje; a visa for Montenegro may be required depending on nationality.
