The Dow Jones News Fund runs this multiweek course for beginning reporters. It covers interviewing, reporting, writing, pitching, source development, community coverage and newsroom technology with instruction from experienced journalists.

Participating media companies nominate employed reporters and support their participation. Fellows attend weekly online training over four weeks and a two-day in-person session, with the next cohort scheduled for Spring 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • The Dow Jones News Fund covers all training costs with support from News Corp Philanthropy.
  • The sponsoring newsroom provides paid time off for four weekly online sessions.
  • The sponsoring newsroom covers roundtrip transport to the two-day out-of-town session.

Eligibility

  • Nominees must be newsroom staff members with less than three years of experience.
  • A sponsoring newsroom selects the fellow, and an editor must submit the nomination.
  • The newsroom must provide paid time for online training and cover the required roundtrip travel.
  • The official program information publishes no nationality, residency, age or degree requirement.

    Ask an editor to nominate you and confirm that the newsroom can meet the paid-time and travel commitments.

    The editor submits the nomination through the form linked from the program page by November 1, 2026.

    If selected, coordinate online training time and travel to the in-person session with the sponsoring newsroom.
