Benefits & funding

• Award value runs from HK$5,000 to full tuition coverage; some awards add an allowance of up to HK$66,000 per year.
• Many awards are renewable for the normative period of the programme, subject to satisfactory academic progress.
• Mainland Gaokao entrants have their own published tiers: the full scholarship covers four years of tuition plus a HK$66,000 yearly hostel and living allowance; the full tuition award covers four years of tuition; the half-tuition award covers half of four years of tuition; an excellence and diversity award of HK$50,000 goes to winners of a gold or first prize in a national competition during senior secondary school.
• Named awards inside the scheme include the HKSAR Government Scholarship at HK$40,000 a year for local students and HK$80,000 a year for non-local students, and the Belt and Road Scholarship covering full tuition for students from six designated countries — Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar and Thailand — with a separate strand for other Belt and Road regions.
• Eight non-renewable Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence of HK$50,000 each are awarded each year across all admission channels.
• One-off awards of HK$50,000 to HK$214,000 go to non-local students who excel in areas such as sport, music, art, science and technology; sports scholarships of HK$15,000 to HK$80,000 run for local students, with a guaranteed hostel place in the first year.
• Smaller awards include HK$47,000 on a non-renewable basis for entrants admitted through the School Recommendation Direct Admission Scheme, and up to ten awards a year of HK$10,000 for students with special educational needs. Honours at Entrance carries no cash value and is recorded on the official transcript.
• For context on costs, hostel fees are about HK$17,000 a year and living expenses about HK$45,000, and a caution fee of HK$450 is payable on enrolment.

Eligibility

• Admission to a full-time CUHK undergraduate programme is the only gate. The scholarships have no separate application form and no separate deadline.
• Local students qualify through JUPAS on HKDSE results, or through the non-JUPAS route with GCE A-Level, IB Diploma, SAT, OSSD, B.C. Diploma or equivalent, ATAR, Taiwan GSAT, Cambridge Pre-U, an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma.
• Non-local students qualify with mainland Gaokao results, or from any other region with an academic qualification that meets undergraduate admission requirements.
• No nationality or residency bar applies to the scheme as a whole. Individual named awards inside it are narrower: the Belt and Road Scholarship is limited to the six designated countries, and the HKSAR Government Scholarship is awarded on government nomination.
• The mainland Gaokao scholarship regulations set score floors: 630 or above for the science, engineering or physics group and 600 or above for the humanities, history or comprehensive group, or a Gaokao score excluding bonus points that ranks in the top 0.5% of the provincial examination group. The English subject score must reach 130. The full scholarship goes to the top 0.05% of the provincial group and the full tuition award to the top 0.1%.
• Mainland scholarship holders must reach an annual grade point average of 3.000, counting the first and second semesters of the year and excluding summer courses, to renew the award.
• Non-local applicants must also clear the English requirement of their admission route, for example IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 80, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 590, ACT ELA 23, IB 4, or grade E at GCE A-Level or AS.
• Current mainland Gaokao candidates cannot apply through the international and non-local scheme; they enter through their provincial early admission batch.

Application process

   Identify the right admission route: JUPAS, non-JUPAS, mainland Gaokao, or the international and non-local route.

   International and non-local applicants submit one online admission application, which is considered in both the advance offer round and the regular round.

   Mainland Gaokao candidates enter CUHK, institution code 81002, in the early admission batch of their provincial, municipal or autonomous region examination authority once results are released. There is no interview and admission follows Gaokao scores.

   Submit no scholarship form. The University and the departments identify qualified new students and notify the selected ones of the scholarship offer.

   Accept the admission offer within the stated period, which for the international and non-local route includes a HK$10,000 payment, then register and select courses in August and September.
