The Coordinate Research Program enables Harvard faculty to invite faculty members based outside the United States to Harvard for collaborative research in established Asian Studies. Joint research is the main focus, while the collaboration may also include co-organizing conferences and workshops.
Individual scholars cannot apply independently; a nominating Harvard faculty member must submit the materials. The Institute gives preference to scholars at Asia-based universities, but graduate students are not eligible.
Benefits & funding
- A research stay at Harvard lasting between 3 and 9 months.
- Economy-class round-trip transportation to Cambridge.
- A monthly stipend, housing, and medical insurance for the individual scholar.
Eligibility
- The nominee must be a faculty member working with a Harvard faculty member on collaborative research in established Asian Studies.
- The nominee must be based at a higher education institution outside the United States when applying.
- Graduate students cannot be nominated.
- The grant is not intended to extend the stay of a scholar already in the United States.
- Scholars at Asia-based universities receive preference rather than exclusive eligibility.

Application process
- 1A Harvard faculty member identifies and nominates an eligible collaborating faculty scholar.
- 2The nominated scholar completes the official application form and provides a CV.
- 3The nominating Harvard faculty member writes a letter explaining the project’s collaborative nature.
- 4The Harvard faculty nominator submits the letter, completed form, and CV by email by April 15 or October 15.
- 5The selection committee communicates its decision no later than six weeks after the deadline.
