CHAI interns conduct research in human-compatible artificial intelligence under a mentor at UC Berkeley’s Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence. Most interns lead a project with mentor guidance, while some join team-based projects; the work commonly targets workshop or conference publication.
The program usually runs over the summer, but dates are flexible and arranged with the mentor. Applications for the 2026 cycle are closed, and CHAI has not announced an opening date for the next cycle.
Benefits & funding
- In-person interns receive $5,000 per month, while remote interns receive $3,500 per month.
- Internships typically last 12–16 weeks.
- Interns receive project supervision and can join CHAI seminars, its annual workshop and team activities.
- Intern-led projects are typically prepared as first-author workshop papers, while team projects are commonly prepared as conference papers.
Eligibility
- Applicants need a background in machine learning, computer science, mathematics or a related field.
- Undergraduate and Master’s students, PhD students or researchers, and professional software or machine-learning engineers may apply.
- Prior machine-learning research is advantageous but not required.
- International applicants are accepted.
- In-person participation at UC Berkeley is preferred, but remote participation is possible.
