CERN’s Next Generation Triggers doctoral opportunity lets university doctoral researchers conduct thesis work with CERN and their home university. Participants join CERN’s international research environment in Geneva and contribute to applied physics, engineering, computing, or related technical work.

The 2026 call offered a hybrid arrangement and an initial 12-month association renewable for up to three years. That call is now closed: the NGT jobs page no longer lists it, and its application form has expired.

Benefits & funding

  • CHF 3,907 monthly tax-free allowance.
  • Initial 12-month contract, renewable for up to three years and spread across at most four consecutive years when university time is needed.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year plus two weeks of annual closure.
  • CERN health-insurance coverage, with the participant’s contribution deducted from the allowance.
  • A family supplement and travel expenses to Geneva may be provided according to individual circumstances.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have started or be about to start a doctoral programme at a university.
  • The home university must support participation and agree that the CERN research contributes to the applicant’s PhD thesis.
  • The field should align with CERN research, including applied physics, engineering, computing, or related applied sciences.
  • Good knowledge of English or French is required.
  • The 2026 listing stated no nationality or residency restriction.
