The Canon Foundation in Europe funds a two-way research exchange between Europe and Japan. Researchers holding European nationality carry out their project at a host institution in Japan, and Japanese researchers do the same somewhere in Europe. Every research field is supported and the Foundation sets no theme. Fellows spend between three and twelve months abroad and receive up to €30,000 per year, pro-rated for shorter stays. The Foundation places nobody: applicants find their own host institution and supervisor and submit a letter from that host with the application. Awards in the current round cover research carried out during 2027.

Benefits & funding

  • Up to €30,000 per year, pro-rated for stays shorter than a year.
  • A research stay of three to twelve months, held between 1 January and 31 December 2027; a fellowship may continue into 2028.
  • All research fields are eligible. The applicant defines the project and estimates the total costs in a two-page research plan.
  • Amounts are set at the discretion of the Foundation and depend on the nature of the project.
  • The Foundation does not award fellowships to applicants who already hold a concurrent research grant from another authority.

Eligibility

  • Open to nationals of European countries and to Japanese nationals. The Foundation counts the Balkans, the Baltic states, Israel, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK as European for this programme.
  • The direction of travel is fixed: European nationals research in Japan, Japanese nationals research in Europe.
  • Applicants holding African nationality are not eligible for this programme.
  • Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree when they submit, completed within the ten years before the application. The Foundation may extend that window for justified reasons such as parental leave, medical grounds or military service.
  • Applicants do not need to be enrolled at a university or employed at the time of applying.
  • Applicants arrange their own host institution. The Foundation has no partner universities and cannot help find a host, a professor or a placement.
  • Preference goes to applicants who will travel for the fellowship over those seeking to extend a stay already under way.
  • No age limit and no minimum years of work experience are stated.

Application process

    Secure a host institution and a supervisor in the destination country, and ask for a confirmation letter that describes the facilities and the supervision on offer.

    Register on the Foundation portal and select the Research Fellowship Programme; registration opens the full application form.

    Prepare the uploads: a research plan of at most two A4 pages including an estimate of total costs, a CV, proof of the highest degree obtained, one passport-size photograph, a chronological list of publications and professional achievements with all authors, place, year and page references, two reference letters, and the host institution confirmation letter.

    Submit the application by 15 September 2026, 23:59 CET.

    If the reference letters or the host letter are not ready by then, submit anyway, log back in to upload them by 30 September 2026, 23:59 CET, and re-submit. Referees and hosts may also email their letters to the Foundation directly.
