The Cambridge Toshiba Japan and the World Graduate Scholarship pays for a PhD in the Faculty of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge. The Cambridge Trust offers it with the Toshiba International Foundation.
It backs research in any discipline, modern or premodern, that places Japan within the wider world. The University’s funding search lists one award for 2026/27; no 2027/28 award is listed yet.

Eligibility
- Applicants for the full-time PhD in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, subject area Japanese Studies
- Research that places Japan within the wider context of the world
- Any nationality
- A relevant master’s degree scored at least 67%, plus a relevant bachelor’s of at least 67% (or overseas equivalents)
- Chosen on academic merit and financial need
- The Trust does not fund a degree at the same level as, or lower than, one you already hold
