The Cambridge Trust offers this scholarship with the Toshiba International Foundation for one prospective full-time PhD student in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. The student undertakes Japanese Studies at the University of Cambridge, and the award is tenable at any Cambridge College.

The research must place Japan within the wider context of the world. The award supports the course length and is assessed on academic merit and financial need.

Benefits & funding

  • One award is available for the 2026/27 award year.
  • The award covers Home or international tuition fees, maintenance and the student immigration health surcharge.
  • Funding runs for the course length; the optional PhD writing-up period is not automatic, but up to six additional months of maintenance may be requested.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be prospective students applying for the full-time PhD in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, with Japanese Studies as the subject area; the funded level of study is PhD.
  • The course requires at least 67% in a relevant bachelor’s degree and, by the course start date, a relevant master’s qualification at 67% or above, measured against UK standards or the overseas equivalent.
  • The proposed research must place Japan within the wider context of the world.
  • Selection is based on academic merit and financial need.
  • The scholarship may be held at any Cambridge College.
  • The current listing states no nationality, residency, age, gender or work-experience restriction.
