The Bridging Divides Journalism Fellowship brings experienced journalists to the Global Migration Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University for a residency of 20 to 35 consecutive days. The Institute is TMU’s migration research hub, formed by bringing together the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, which concludes in 2026, the Toronto Metropolitan Centre for Immigration and Settlement, and Bridging Divides, a four-university program supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. Fellows are matched with an academic host, take part in research events and workshops, and use the time for their own reporting or learning on migration and integration. The Institute also asks fellows to tell researchers how journalism works and how research reaches the media. The application form runs under the name CERC Migration and Bridging Divides Journalism Fellowship. The most recent round closed on 1 November 2025 and the Institute has not yet published dates for the next one.

Eligibility

  • Staff or freelance journalists with a proven track record covering immigration, politics, social issues, global affairs, or the economy.
  • A minimum of five years of media work experience.
  • Work samples showing coverage of complex issues that are international in scope.
  • No nationality or residency requirement is stated.

Application process

    Read the Institute’s research themes and pick a preferred academic host from the Global Migration Institute or the TMU-based Bridging Divides research teams, plus a backup; the Scientific Director, Anna Triandafyllidou, is not available as a host.

    Prepare a condensed CV of no more than four pages.

    Write a cover letter of no more than two pages covering motivation, fit with the Institute’s research themes, the activities planned for the residency, the preferred and backup host, and the proposed visit dates.

    Gather two to three work samples, as PDFs or links.

    Add one letter of recommendation if you have one; it is optional.
