The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, a research centre in Oxford’s Faculty of Law, runs a yearly programme of student fellowships with human rights organisations, including courts, NGOs and research institutes around the world.

Each Fellow works on a defined project under a supervisor or mentor at the host. Most placements are full time; the Turpin and Miller Fellowship runs three days a week, and some placements are remote.

Benefits & funding

  • A bursary set for each Fellow and host, meant to remove financial barriers; it is not a wage.
  • The amount depends on whether the placement is remote, local accommodation, flights and travel, and time spent in person.
  • Visa costs are not covered.
  • The Samuel Pisar Travelling Fellowship pays a fixed amount instead.

Eligibility

  • Graduate students in the Oxford Law Faculty (BCL, MJur, MSc, MSt, MPhil, DPhil), or Oxford graduate students in other departments who hold a law degree.
  • Final-year BA (Jurisprudence) students, or Oxford Law Faculty graduates (BA included) within the last 12 months.
  • Graduate students finishing their degree; in suitable cases, after consulting their supervisor, students may intermit to take a placement.
  • Applicants must show enough knowledge of human rights, public, international or constitutional law to contribute to the host.
  • Some fellowships differ: the Samuel Pisar and African Court fellowships are narrower; International IDEA also takes Oxford students in fields such as political and social science.
  • Anyone placed in the UK must arrange any visa they need themselves.

Application process

  1. 1
Prepare one combined PDF: the application form, a CV, a motivation letter (ideally ranking at least two fellowships), transcripts and two references (a research student’s supervisor must be one).
  2. 2
