The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University runs an annual open-call fellowship that gathers an interdisciplinary community to study how digital technologies shape society. Fellows come from academia and practice — law, computer science, policy, journalism, the arts — and pursue their own research or projects alongside the Center’s ongoing work. Appointments run for the academic year, with fellows encouraged to be in residence in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Beyond the annual open call, the Center periodically posts project-specific fellowships tied to particular initiatives, some of them funded staff roles.

Benefits & funding

  • A fully funded fellow selected through the open call is eligible for a stipend of up to $6,250 per month, up to $75,000 over a 12-month appointment. Center funding is limited and highly competitive, so many fellows also bring external support.
  • Affiliation with Harvard and access to the Center’s community, events, and research network.
  • For eligible international fellows, the Center works with the Harvard International Office to sponsor visa paperwork.
  • Open-call fellowships are non-employee roles; some project-specific fellowships are salaried staff positions.

Eligibility

  • Open to academics (faculty at all ranks, postdoctoral scholars) and practitioners from industry, government, and civil society.
  • International applicants are eligible; there is no nationality restriction.
  • Students are not eligible through the open call.
  • Certain technical tracks expect a relevant advanced degree (for example, a Ph.D. in computer science or a related field for research-scientist roles).
  • Residence in the Cambridge area for most of the appointment is strongly encouraged; non-resident fellowships are considered case by case.

Application process
