The Barbara Huber Scholarship Program is run by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg, Germany. It funds a research stay of two to six months at the institute for academics based at research institutions outside Germany. The program honors Dr. Barbara Huber (1935–2018), a comparative-law scholar long associated with the institute. It supports innovative projects in criminology, criminal law, or public law that offer a genuinely new perspective, question, or finding. Visiting researchers gain access to the institute’s libraries, data, and academic community. Each of the institute’s departments may award one scholarship per calendar year.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly stipend by career stage: EUR 1,650 for doctoral candidates, EUR 2,700 for postdocs, EUR 3,200 for professors and experienced researchers.
  • Research stay of two to a maximum of six months at the institute in Freiburg.
  • Additional grants may be provided for academic events and research activities in Germany or other European countries.
  • Access to the Max Planck Institute’s research infrastructure and scholarly network.

Eligibility

  • Outstanding academics affiliated with research institutions outside Germany.
  • Open to doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and professors or experienced researchers.
  • Research must fall within criminology, criminal law, or public law and offer a new perspective, question, or finding.
  • Proof of health insurance valid for the stay is required.
  • No nationality restriction is stated; the criterion is affiliation with a foreign (non-German) institution.

Application process
