Official Page

The AYUSH Scholarship Scheme for Non-BIMSTEC Countries pays for degrees in India’s traditional medical systems for students from countries outside the BIMSTEC group. Twenty scholarships are offered each year, and ICCR’s scheme list describes the reach as 102 countries.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations runs the scheme as agency work for India’s Ministry of AYUSH. Scholars take degrees in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy or Yoga at Indian universities, institutes and colleges, from bachelor’s level through to a PhD.

Everything moves through ICCR’s A2A scholarship portal on a single annual cycle, and the 20 places are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Indian institution, not ICCR, decides whether an applicant is admitted.

Benefits & funding

  • Tuition and the other compulsory course fees are paid as per actuals.
  • Monthly stipend at ICCR’s published AYUSH rates: INR 18,000 for undergraduate study; INR 35,500 in year one of an MD and INR 38,000 in years two and three; INR 43,500 for PhD scholars.
  • House rent allowance of up to INR 6,500 a month.
  • Contingent grant of INR 4,500 a year for undergraduates and INR 12,000 a year for master’s and doctoral scholars.
  • One economy-class return air ticket.
  • Three months of stipend are released on arrival; scholars open an Indian bank account within a month of arriving, and every later payment goes to that account.
  • Medical treatment is provided under Central Government Health Scheme rules.

Eligibility

  • Open to nationals of countries outside the BIMSTEC group; the six BIMSTEC countries, Malaysia and the South East Asian Region countries each have their own AYUSH scheme.
  • ICCR’s scheme list puts the reach at 102 countries and its scheme-description page at 93; neither publishes the country list, so confirm with the Indian Mission covering your country.
  • Applicants must be 18 or older, medically fit, and proficient enough in English to follow the course.
  • The undergraduate medicine tracks (BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, BHMS) run 5.5 years including one year of mandatory clinical training, and require 12 years of schooling with physics, chemistry and biology.
  • B.Sc. (Yoga) and B.A. (Yoga Shastra) run three years and require 12 years of schooling in any stream.
  • An MD in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani or Homoeopathy runs three years and requires a relevant bachelor’s degree recognised by the Central Council of Indian Medicine; M.Sc. (Yoga) runs two years and accepts any bachelor’s degree.
  • A PhD in Ayurveda runs three years and requires an MD (Ayurveda) recognised by the Central Council of Indian Medicine; a PhD in Yoga runs four to five years and accepts any master’s degree.

Application process

  1. 1
Check on the A2A scheme list that the Non-BIMSTEC AYUSH scheme covers your country and your intended subject.
  2. 2
Register on the A2A portal for the academic year, with passport and personal details that match your documents.
  3. 3
Complete the online application under the AYUSH category for your level — UG, PG or PhD — and list three course and university preferences in order.
  4. 4
Upload the supporting documents; everything entered on the portal must match them.
  5. 5
Ask the Indian Mission covering your country whether it requires a printed set, a fee, or an earlier local cut-off.
  6. 6
Indian institutions assess admission on their own criteria; ICCR awards the scholarship only after an institution confirms admission.
  7. 7
On selection, complete medical and visa formalities — a student visa for UG and PG courses, a research visa for a PhD — and join the course on time. Admission is treated as cancelled if you cannot join within a month.
