Australia Awards Scholarships in Indonesia fund postgraduate study at participating Australian universities. The Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade funds the awards, with Australia Awards in Indonesia managing the local process.

Recipients undertake a full-time Master’s or PhD in Australia and are expected to apply their learning to Indonesia’s development after returning home. Priority study areas cover economic transformation, climate-resilient communities, and strong institutions.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Indonesian citizens residing in and applying from Indonesia.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 on 1 February of the year their scholarship begins.
  • Master’s applicants must hold an undergraduate degree; PhD applicants must hold a Master’s degree.
  • The proposed course must fall within the published priority fields of study.
  • Minimum GPA requirements on a 4.0 scale are 2.9 for Master’s and 3.0 for PhD applicants in the Government of Indonesia and non-targeted categories; the Equity Target Group minimum is 2.75 for either level.
  • English requirements vary by award and applicant category. For Master’s applicants, the minimum is IELTS 6.0 or its listed equivalent for Government of Indonesia and non-targeted applicants, and IELTS 4.5 or equivalent for Equity Target Group applicants. For PhD applicants, it is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for Government of Indonesia and Equity Target Group applicants, and IELTS 6.5 or equivalent for non-targeted applicants. Results must be valid on 1 January 2027.
  • PhD applicants are restricted to staff of universities, higher education or research institutes, key policymakers, and targeted candidates in agencies associated with DFAT activities.
  • Applicants must not be current-serving military personnel, must satisfy institutional and student-visa requirements, and must not be applying for permanent residence in Australia.
  • Successful applicants must be available for full-time English for Academic Purposes training in Indonesia; this may last from six weeks to 12 months.

Application process
