Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program at IUJ

Benefits & funding

• Full tuition.
• The JPY 300,000 admissions fee is covered; recipients initially pay JPY 50,000, which is reimbursed after enrollment.
• A JPY 144,000 monthly stipend, including housing allowance, at the rate stated as of April 2024.
• A JPY 108,000 annual book allowance, medical and accident insurance, and a thesis allowance.
• Two one-way economy-class air tickets between the scholar’s home country and Japan.
• The award is initially for one year; extension for a second year depends on satisfactory academic performance.

Eligibility

• Citizenship of Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Micronesia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, or Vietnam.
• No dual citizenship of a developed country.
• Admission to an approved IUJ master’s program and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a strong academic record.
• At least two years of full-time public- or private-sector work experience gained after completing the undergraduate degree, plus sufficient spoken and written English for study.
• No older than 35 at the time of application and in good health.
• Must be living, working, and studying in the applicant’s own home country; residence in another country is not eligible.
• In principle, must not already hold a master’s or doctoral degree or be enrolled in a degree program. ADB personnel, specified close relatives, and staff of ADB–JSP designated institutions are not eligible.

Application process

   When IUJ applications reopen, create an online application and apply to an approved IUJ master’s program.

   Choose “Non-Sponsored” in the sponsorship section, complete the second-phase scholarship form, and indicate interest in ADB–JSP consideration.

   Submit all degree and scholarship information by the applicable IUJ intake deadline; applying in the first or second intake is strongly recommended for full-scholarship consideration.

   If IUJ selects the applicant for nomination, complete the separate ADB scholarship form sent by IUJ.

   IUJ forwards the nomination to ADB, which makes the final decision; IUJ then informs the candidate.

1. Final international application deadline for the most recently completed admission cycle.

   IUJ plans to open applications for September 2027 admission; no exact opening date is published.

3. First international application deadline for September 2027 admission.

   Dec 10, 2026

4. Second international application deadline; the first or second intake is strongly recommended for full-scholarship consideration.

   Feb 11, 2027

5. Third international application deadline; full-scholarship nomination is much less likely in this intake.

   Apr 14, 2027

6. ADB final selections are expected to reach IUJ, which then notifies candidates.

   July 2027

7. Admission and study at IUJ begin.
