ICGEB’s Arturo Falaschi programme supports short postdoctoral research stays in ICGEB laboratories in Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town. Fellows collaborate with ICGEB research groups to access research techniques and strengthen scientific capacity.
The September 2026 cycle uses two-stage selection. The public expression-of-interest period closed on 14 August 2026; only candidates selected by a prospective supervisor may submit a full application from 16 to 30 September 2026.
Benefits & funding
- Fellowship duration: 1–6 months.
- Monthly stipend: EUR 2,300 in Trieste, USD 1,749 in New Delhi, or ZAR 27,500 in Cape Town.
- Travel from the fellow’s home country to the ICGEB laboratory and return travel after completion.
- Medical health insurance for the fellowship period.
- Reimbursement of visa or permit-of-stay application and renewal costs.
- No financial or administrative support is provided for accompanying family members.

- Applicants must be nationals of one of these 69 ICGEB Member States: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Qatar, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Türkiye, United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
- Applicants may not undertake the fellowship in their country of origin unless they have been working abroad for at least the previous three years and are still abroad when applying.
- Applicants should hold a recent PhD in Life Sciences or have at least three years of research experience.
- Candidates under 35 receive preference, but this is not an age requirement.
- A TOEFL, Cambridge or similar English certificate is required unless English was the medium of instruction, in which case the university must provide an official certificate.
- Only one fellowship application may be submitted per call.

Application process

- 2During the public window, submit an expression of interest in one session by choosing one ICGEB component, one research group and a prospective supervisor, then providing career information, a motivation letter of up to 200 words and a project abstract.
- 3Wait for the chosen research group to review the expression of interest.
- 4If invited, complete the full application in the Service Gateway, including the detailed research proposal and referee details.
- 5Upload the required PDF files: a full CV, identification document and English certificate or university declaration, then confirm submission.
