Arturo Falaschi Short-term PhD Fellowships – September 2026

Benefits & funding

• Fellowship duration is 1–12 months.
• Monthly stipend: EUR 1,500 in Trieste, USD 1,122 in New Delhi, or ZAR 16,500 in Cape Town.
• The fellowship provides travel from the fellow’s home country to the host laboratory and return travel after completion.
• Medical insurance and visa or permit-of-stay application and renewal costs are covered.
• ICGEB does not fund or provide administrative support for accompanying family members. Trieste has no ICGEB housing facility, New Delhi offers a twin-share guest house for a nominal charge, and Cape Town provides accommodation support arranged before arrival.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be nationals of a full ICGEB Member State: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Qatar, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Türkiye, United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, or Zimbabwe. Signatory and pending-member countries are not eligible.
• A candidate may not undertake the fellowship in the candidate’s country of origin unless the candidate is working abroad when applying.
• Trieste and Cape Town applicants should hold a BSc Honours degree; New Delhi applicants should hold an MSc degree.
• Applicants need working English supported by a TOEFL, Cambridge, or equivalent certificate. If English was the medium of instruction, the university may instead issue an official confirmation.
• Applicants must be associated with a laboratory, and collaboration with the proposed ICGEB research group must be established. PhD enrolment is not mandatory, although enrolled candidates receive preference. There is no age limit.

Application process

   Create an account in the ICGEB Service Gateway, select one host institute, research group, and prospective supervisor, then complete the expression of interest in one session.

   Provide applicant and career information, a motivation statement of no more than 200 words, and a project title and abstract by 14 August 2026 at 23:59 CET.

   Wait for the prospective research group’s review. Only shortlisted candidates receive access to the full application.

   Between 16 and 30 September 2026, invited candidates complete the full form and upload a CV, valid identity document, and English certificate or university medium-of-instruction declaration. Only one fellowship application is accepted per call.
