ICGEB runs this competitive fellowship for postdoctoral research in life sciences at its laboratories in Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town. Fellows join a selected ICGEB research group for two years, with a possible one-year extension.
The programme supports scientists who are nationals of ICGEB Member States. The September 2026 intake begins on 1 February 2027 at all three sites; the next call is expected to open in January 2027.
Benefits & funding
- Monthly stipend: EUR 2,300 in Trieste, USD 1,749 in New Delhi, or ZAR 27,500 in Cape Town.
- Travel from the fellow’s home country to the host laboratory at the start and return travel after completion.
- Medical insurance for the fellowship period and reimbursement of visa or stay-permit application and renewal costs.
- Research costs are covered by the research group’s budget; meeting and course support is generally provided by the Group Leader or principal investigator.
- The award lasts two years and may be extended for one additional year. ICGEB provides no financial or administrative support for accompanying family members.

- Applicants may not undertake the fellowship in their country of origin unless they have been working abroad for at least the previous three years and remain abroad when applying.
- Applicants must hold a recent PhD in Life Sciences or have at least three years of research experience.
- An English-language certificate is required unless English was the language of instruction, in which case the university must provide confirmation.
- Candidates under 35 receive preference; this is not stated as a hard age limit.
- Only one application per candidate is accepted in each call.

Application process
- 1Select an ICGEB laboratory and prospective supervisor, then submit an expression of interest through the ICGEB Service Gateway between 1 July and 14 August 2026.
- 2Principal investigators review the expressions of interest.
- 3Candidates selected by a prospective supervisor receive permission to submit a full application through the gateway between 16 and 30 September 2026.
- 4Complete the online sections and upload the required PDF documents, including a CV, PhD records, identification and English-language evidence where required.
- 5The applicant’s national ICGEB Liaison Officer must endorse the submission before the ICGEB Fellowship Selection Committee evaluates it.
