Art Omi is a not-for-profit arts centre founded in 1992 on a rural campus in Ghent, New York, about two and a half hours north of New York City. Art Omi: Artists is its visual-art residency, and it runs once a year in June and July. Each session brings together two dozen artists from around the world, along with two critics or curators who join as Critic Emeritus and Critic/Curator-in-Residence and are chosen through a separate spring cycle.
The 2027 session runs from 17 June to 12 July 2027. Residents live and work on the campus with a private studio, a bedroom and three meals a day at no cost, and they pay their own travel and materials. The programme is open to visual artists, sound artists, performance artists and social-practice artists who have been professionally active for at least five years, and an art degree is not required.
Benefits & funding
- No cost to attend: a private bedroom in shared living quarters, a private studio and three meals a day.
- Studio and campus facilities: indoor and protected outdoor studio space, a kiln, basic hand tools, WiFi across the campus, bicycles and a swimming pool. Linens, towels and blankets are supplied and rooms are cleaned regularly.
- Travel and material costs are the artist’s own. Art Omi does not provide a materials stipend outside its sponsored fellowships.
- Sponsored fellowships carry a stipend and, in several cases, a travel grant. The Every Page Foundation Fellowship is USD 2,000 for a female artist from an underserved community anywhere in the world. Most other fellowships are USD 500.
- Awarded automatically from the open-call pool, with no separate application: Every Page Foundation Fellowship; two Larkin Dawn Fellowships a year for artists based outside the United States (USD 500 plus travel grant); the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation Fellowship for an artist living and working in the United States (USD 500 plus travel grant).
- Applied for through the main open call: the American Dream Fellowship for an artist from any country who has never been to the United States (USD 500 plus travel grant); the Francis J. Greenburger Fellowship for work on managing or mitigating religious and ethnic conflict (USD 500 plus travel grant, with a one-page statement added to the application); the Unlimit Art Fellowship, which addresses limits society places on people with disabilities (USD 500 plus travel grant); the Charlotte Street Foundation Fellowship for a Charlotte Street affiliated artist in Kansas City (USD 500).
- Fellowships with their own call, deadline and waived application fee: the Art Omi Australia Committee Fellowship for an artist in Australia with at least ten years of practice (September 2026); the Eremuak Fellowship for an artist in the Basque Country (December 2026); the Art Omi Fellowship for an artist living and working in Croatia (January 2027).
- Partner routes handled by the funder: the Hanwha Fellowship for a South Korean artist based anywhere in the world, and Rubys Artist Grants of up to USD 15,000 for Baltimore-area artists through the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation.
- Art Omi will issue a participation letter for a visa application and can answer visa questions.
Eligibility
- Open to artists from anywhere in the world. No nationality or residency requirement applies to the main open call.
- At least five years of professional, exhibiting practice, shown in the CV.
- Visual art, sound art, performance and social practice are all in scope.
- Formal art training is not required; self-taught professional artists are accepted.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. No upper age limit is stated.
- Artists currently enrolled in a BFA or MFA programme cannot apply. PhD students and students enrolled in a master’s programme outside the arts are eligible.
- Submitted work must have been completed within the past ten years.
- Former Art Omi: Artists residents cannot apply for a second residency.
- Applications must be written in English.
- Individual fellowships add their own conditions on location, identity or subject matter, and those are assessed on top of the main call.

Application process
- 1Read the application requirements page and the residency FAQs before starting.
- 2Assemble the materials: a CV showing at least five years of art practice, a narrative biography, an artist statement, and a portfolio of either eight images, or three video excerpts, or five images with one video excerpt, each with a short description. Everything is submitted in English.
- 3Apply through the open call, which runs from Friday 14 August to Monday 14 September 2026 on Submittable. The application fee is USD 15.
- 4Add anything a specific fellowship asks for, such as the one-page statement for the Francis J. Greenburger Fellowship. The automatic fellowships need no extra step.
- 5Artists based in Australia, the Basque Country or Croatia apply instead through those dedicated calls, which have their own deadlines and no application fee.
- 6Review panels assess the open call, and separate panels assess individual fellowships. Artists are notified in March 2027.
