The Amgen Scholars Program — Asia places undergraduates in full-time summer research at five host institutions in Hyderabad, Kyoto, Singapore, Tokyo, and Beijing. It is funded by the Amgen Foundation, with Amgen India supporting the IIIT Hyderabad route, and receives direction and technical assistance from Harvard University.

Scholars join research laboratories for eight to 10 weeks and take part in an Asia Symposium with peers and scientists from academia and industry. Research spans biomedical science, biotechnology, engineering, health-related AI and machine learning, and disciplines connected to human therapeutics.

  • IIIT Hyderabad states that it provides a stipend, on-campus accommodation, and travel support.
  • NUS states that it provides a stipend, housing, travel grants to and from Singapore, and symposium travel.
  • Tsinghua states that it provides a stipend, round-trip travel to Beijing, summer tuition, housing, and an on-campus meal allowance.
  • Travel to the Asia Symposium, plus room and board during the symposium, is covered.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled at a college or university in an eligible Asian country or area that awards a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • They must have completed at least their first undergraduate year by the program start.
  • They must not graduate before the program and must resume undergraduate study for at least one semester or quarter afterward.
  • Applicants need a strong academic record, an interest in pursuing a Ph.D., and working English. Non-native or non-first-language English speakers must meet one published threshold: TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC 1095, TOEIC L&R 785, or TOEIC S&W 310.
  • There is no citizenship requirement, no prior research requirement, and no requirement to major in science or engineering.
  • Applicants may apply to multiple Asian hosts through separate applications, but may apply in only one Amgen Scholars region.
