The Amgen Scholars Europe Programme places undergraduates in intensive summer research at ETH Zurich, Institut Pasteur, Karolinska Institutet, LMU Munich, or the University of Cambridge. It is funded by the Amgen Foundation, with direction and technical assistance from Harvard University.
Scholars join host research groups, receive mentoring and training, and present their work. The programme concludes with a Europe symposium at Cambridge focused on scientific exchange, biotechnology, and drug development.
Benefits & funding
- Eight to 10 weeks of full-time, mentor-guided research, depending on the host institution.
- Financial support is provided, but the amount and coverage differ by host.
- Travel to and from the Europe symposium, plus room and board during the symposium, are covered.
- Institut Pasteur, Karolinska Institutet, and Cambridge state that participant housing is provided; applicants should check each host’s current terms for other living and travel support.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be undergraduates enrolled at a university in a country participating in the European Higher Education Area and Bologna Process, and must intend to earn their undergraduate degree at a European university. The programme lists Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Holy See, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
- They must not have completed their bachelor’s or equivalent first degree before the programme begins. At Karolinska Institutet, applicants for a first degree must apply in their first or second year; medical applicants must apply within their first three years and must not have completed pre-clinical training when the programme starts.
- A strong academic record and an interest in pursuing a Ph.D. are required.
- There is no citizenship requirement, and the applicant’s main subject need not be science or engineering.
- Prior research experience is not required. A participant may join Amgen Scholars for only one summer and may apply in only one global region.
