The Amgen Scholars Canada Program is a 10-week, full-time summer research experience hosted by the University of Toronto and supported by the Amgen Foundation. Participants work in biomedical research laboratories with U of T faculty mentors and take part in seminars, journal clubs and professional-development activities.

The 2026 cohort is based at the St. George campus in downtown Toronto. Scholars also present their work and attend the National Amgen Scholars Program Symposium in July.

Eligibility

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be enrolled at an accredited university in Canada in the second, third or non-graduating fourth year of an undergraduate degree.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must be interested in pursuing an M.Sc., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.
  • Any major may apply, although the research focuses on biomedical science and biotechnology.
  • Previous research experience is not required; basic laboratory experience is considered an asset.
  • Scholars must participate full-time for 10 continuous weeks, live in the provided campus accommodation and not take courses or work during the program.

Application process

    Submit Part 1 of the application form to receive an Applicant ID.
  2. 2
    Ask two referees to submit confidential recommendation letters using the Applicant ID by the deadline.
  3. 3
    Review the faculty profiles, select three potential mentors and explain the fit with each laboratory.
  4. 4
    Complete the Part 2 short-answer questions and upload a transcript; an unofficial transcript is accepted at application, with an official copy required upon acceptance.
  5. 5
    Submit the completed application by the deadline.
