The Alexia runs this student grant within its annual visual-storytelling competition at the Newhouse School. Applicants enter through the Student Vision Grant application and opt into this mentor category; there is no separate application.

The selected photographer develops a portrait series addressing a clear concept or social issue. Gregory Heisler mentors the recipient remotely over the following year.

Benefits & funding

  • The recipient receives USD 1,000 for project expenses and production.
  • Gregory Heisler provides four Zoom mentoring sessions over the following year.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be college student photographers applying through the Student Vision Grant route.
  • The proposed portrait series must communicate a strong concept or address a social issue and offer meaningful insight into its topic.
  • Only one application per person is accepted each year; previous Alexia grant recipients must sit out the next three cycles.
  • The published 2026 materials state no nationality or residency restriction.

Application process

    Create one Student Vision Grant entry and select consideration for the Portrait Series Mentor Grant.
