The Alexia Faith Grant is a thematic production grant within The Alexia’s annual international competition for visual storytellers. The Alexia at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications administers the competition, and Hendricks Chapel sponsors this grant. It supports nonfiction photography or film projects that provide meaningful insight into issues related to faith.
The same grant has professional and student routes, with different award amounts and fee rules. Recipients develop their proposed projects independently rather than joining a Syracuse-based residency. The 2026 application cycle closed on February 13, 2026.
Benefits & funding
- The professional-route recipient receives a US$5,000 production grant.
- The student-route recipient receives a US$1,000 production grant.
- Submitted images may also be considered for Alexia exhibitions and publications, with creators contacted before use.
- The grant period is one year from signing the grant agreement for both professional and student recipients.
Eligibility
- The professional route is for established photographers and filmmakers producing a substantial body of nonfiction visual work.
- The student route is for full-time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university; the structured degree field remains open because the professional route has no degree gate.
- The proposed project must offer meaningful insight into an issue related to faith and align with The Alexia’s visual-storytelling mission.
- No nationality or residency restriction is published, and The Alexia describes its competition as supporting documentary photographers and filmmakers worldwide.
- Only one application per person is accepted each year; applicants indicate within that submission that they want consideration for the Faith Grant.

Application process
