AAUW International Fellowships, run by the American Association of University Women, fund women from outside the United States during full-time graduate study in a STEM discipline.
The 2027–28 round, now closed, covered a first master’s or a first academic or professional doctorate at a U.S. institution accredited by the Department of Education. Study in a third country is considered only under conditions the page sets out.
Benefits & funding
- US$20,000 for a master’s or US$25,000 for a doctorate, paid to the fellow in two equal instalments.
- Covers one academic year: tuition, fees, course materials and living costs such as housing, food and childcare.
- Not for research assistants, past expenses or loan repayment, publication costs, institutional overhead or dependents’ tuition.
- U.S. tax is withheld: 14% for F, J, M or Q visa holders, or a treaty rate.
Eligibility
- Identifies as a woman.
- Not a U.S. citizen, not a U.S. permanent resident, and not applying for a green card.
- Admitted to or enrolled full time in a first master’s or first doctorate in a STEM discipline.
- Holds a U.S. bachelor’s equivalent, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5/4.0 in the highest degree.
- Starts by 15 September 2027, finishes on or after 30 April 2028, and lives in the country of study during the award.
- English: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120 or Cambridge 176, unless a native speaker or English-medium graduate.
- Past AAUW fellowship or grant recipients are barred (Community Action Grants and branch awards excepted).
