The VH AWARD is a biennial media-art award created by Hyundai Motor Group to discover and support emerging artists whose work engages with the context of Asia. Launched in 2016 and now in its seventh edition, it is open to individuals and collectives worldwide — either those of Asian descent, based in Asia, or part of the Asian diaspora, or anyone whose work engages with Asian contexts. The award centres on audiovisual, screen-based art: video, film, animation, games, motion graphics, and newly explored forms. Five finalists are chosen from an open call, each funded to produce a new single-channel work, then supported through an online residency and shown across international media-art platforms. One of them later receives the Grand Prix.

Benefits & funding

  • Five finalists are selected; each receives a US$30,000 production grant to create a new work.
  • An online residency delivered with Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria): masterclasses, workshops, and one-to-one mentoring to develop the proposed artwork.
  • Exhibition of the commissioned works across international venues — announced platforms include Vision Hall (Yongin, South Korea), HEK — House of Electronic Arts (Basel, Switzerland), the Ars Electronica Festival (Linz), and Singapore Art Week 2028.
  • One Grand Prix recipient, selected by an international jury in June 2027, receives an additional US$30,000.
  • A new Honorary Mention category recognises further artists, who are invited to join selected parts of the online residency.

Eligibility

  • Individuals or collectives may apply. Group entries need a statement of consent from every member.
  • Open to applicants of any nationality: you qualify if your work engages with the context of Asia, OR if you are of Asian descent, based in Asia, or a member of the Asian diaspora.
  • For emerging media artists — no degree, age limit, or years of experience are stated as requirements.
  • The work must be an audiovisual, screen-based piece (video art, film, animation, games, motion graphics, or new forms) suitable for single-channel video presentation.
  • The submitted work must be the applicant’s original creation, must not infringe third-party rights, and must not have won any prior competition before the deadline.

Application process

    Prepare a proposal for a new audiovisual work suitable for single-channel presentation.

    Apply online through the VH AWARD submission platform (vhaward.awardsplatform.com) before the deadline.

    Submit the required materials; for collectives, include consent from all members. No changes are allowed after submission.

    An international jury reviews the entries and selects five finalists.
  5. 5
    Finalists receive the production grant and join the Ars Electronica online residency to develop their works.
  6. 6
    Completed works are exhibited internationally; in June 2027 the jury names one Grand Prix recipient.
